“The angels will die. I swear this to you.”

Cresil was not the kind of demon who broke an oath, least of all to someone he treasured as much as his precious Ivo. Even Kalisa, another angel who tried to protect her human best friend from his untimely demise, had declared vengeance on all the rest of the self-righteous bastards.

“He won’t be fighting alone.” Kalisa had promised, as Ivo’s eyes closed for the last time.

It had been a long while since the attack on Mahorela, but it still seemed right to take Ivo’s body there to lay him to rest. With their small, private funeral done, they knew exactly what to do next.

It was time to hunt down the angels’ army.

Through clever use of magic, both demon and angel based, Cresil and Kalisa were able to determine the current location of the angels’ troops. They had hidden themselves inside a canyon someway south of Qulix, otherwise known as the city of boulders and stone. Kalisa had asked Alice, her little love, to stay hidden within the city while she and Cresil avenged Ivo’s death. Thankfully, her lover had agreed.

Cresil and Kalisa arrived at one end of the canyon in silence. They hadn’t spoken much since Ivo was lost to them, as there wasn’t much to say. Kalisa could tell that Cresil was anything but okay, and likely never would be without his mate, and as for herself, well…she was struggling. Ivo had been her best friend since he was young. She’d looked out for him while the angels plotted his use in the downfall of Merron Nien. It was a struggle to believe he was just…gone.

“Tell me it’s time.” Cresil snarled at Kalisa as she took a moment to sense the locations of the nearest angels.

“It is, my friend.” She said after a few seconds of concentrated silence.

Cresil needed no more information. He raced forward, breaking through a previously invisible wall of shielding magic with an inhuman roar. Kalisa was hot on his heels, watching his back and fighting with him as she had promised her dear friend.

The demon King sent blasts of black magic as spear-wielding guards ran at him. Shockwaves of inky darkness sliced through their bodies like a hot knife through butter, but it wasn’t enough. It would never be enough.

More angels grouped together, forming a shieldwall to keep Kalisa and Cresil from getting through to the army’s leaders. Neither the demon nor the angel cared for this tactic. It would not stop them.

Kalisa reached a hand out, and Cresil, snarling fiercely, gripped her small hand in his. The two closed their eyes and concentrated, unafraid of the approaching angel soldiers. Before the first blade could strike either being, an explosive blast rocked the canyon, spreading outward from the duo. With their powers combined, the blast extended far past either of their natural limits: it disintegrated the angels closest to them, and when it ended, both were certain that no life was left in the canyon.

Cresil collapsed to his knees and howled.

Nothing would ever be the same without his Ivo, and there were still more angels left to kill. Still, he would avenge his lover, no matter what it took.

This was not the end.
